I’m in a relationship but I still don’t like Valentine’s Day.
I know it’s a good excuse to do something nice for someone or whatever, and I’ve definitely done the whole romantic gesture thing before, but to an increasing amount of people it seems to be an excuse to show off how much disposable income they have, rather than showing someone how much they love them. I don’t care if you’ve bought each other presents, or are going to fancy restaurants, or if you got a £50 bunch of flowers. Don’t get me wrong, if people want to do this kind of thing then that’s fine, but I find it a bit sad that it’s turned into some sort of competition and if you don’t spend enough money on your partner then you clearly don’t love them enough.
Despite all this, I’ll be spending my Valentine’s Day with my boyfriend (apart from during the day in which case uni/uni work is more important), but we don’t need presents to know how we feel about each other. I think that says a lot more about our relationship than a card or a meal.
